Beaver Dam to host statewide veterans art project

Messenger-Inquirer - 4/21/2019

April 21-- Apr. 21--Beaver Dam will host a statewide veterans art project during May.

From May 4-31, the Kentucky Veterans Project exhibit will be on display at The Main Place Makers' Shoppe & Studios, formerly the Ohio County Artists' Guild, 101 N. Main St. in Beaver Dam.

The Shoppe will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p,m. Thursday through Saturday.

Other open dates and special events in conjunction with the Veteran's art exhibit will be announced soon.

The Kentucky Arts Council organized the exhibit, which will travel throughout the state through December.

According to the KAC, the exhibit features 44 pieces of art by military veterans and family members of veterans from 23 counties in the commonwealth. It was intentionally curated without a theme, which allowed artists the creative freedom to display the work reflective of their own experience.

Terri Minton, The Main Place coordinator, said the artist collective is excited to have the exhibit in their studios in Beaver Dam.

"I had an opportunity to see the exhibit a few weeks ago and it is so impressive," she said. "The artwork is amazing and we are pleased to be able to help share it with residents in this part of the state."

Beaver Dam Mayor Paul Sandefur said he saw a notice about the exhibit last fall and contacted the Kentucky Arts Council about the possibility of hosting it in the city, and thought the arts organization would be a great host for the event.

"We are thrilled we were able to do so in May as the city's Strawberry Festival is held over the Memorial Day weekend and one of the primary events of the festival is a Veteran's recognition program actually held on Memorial Day," he said.

The artists featured in the Kentucky Veteran Project exhibit include: members of American Legion Post 74, Trigg County, all branches; Herb Bradshaw, Jefferson County, U.S. Army; Raymond Bridewell Sr., Campbell County, U.S. Army; Ember Canada-Kawarada, Fayette County, U.S. Army; David Coffey, Wayne County, U.S. Army; DeAnna Deneen, Jefferson County, U.S. Air Force; Darren Douglass, Fayette County, U.S. Marine Corps; Norma Drish, Jefferson County, U.S. Army; Greg Elswick, Madison County, U.S. Army; Damon Farmer, Woodford County, U.S. Army; James Gundy Jr., Lincoln County, U.S. Army; James Kessinger, Anderson County, U.S. Army; Rick Mjos, Calloway County, U.S. Army; Kimberly Mohammed, Hardin County, U.S. Army; Bobby Newton Sr., Fayette County, U.S. Army; Bert Norris, Madison County, U.S. Air Force; Patti Poe, Warren County, U.S. Army; Scott Raymond, Boone County, U.S. Army; Jimmy Riley, Estill County, U.S. Army; Mark Selter, Marion County, U.S. Army; Stacy Wayne, Franklin County, U.S. Navy/Marine Corps.
