Monday's Veterans Day parade canceled for downtown Springfield

The State Journal-Register - 11/8/2019

Nov. 8--The annual Veterans Day parade scheduled for Monday in downtown Springfield has been canceled.

Parade organizer and Korean War Army veteran Sam Montalbano of Springfield called off the parade due to the forecast of inclement weather for Monday.

"I've been pondering it. I run the parade, and the weather keeps saying worse and worse and worse. They're saying now 30 degrees, blustering winds, possibly snow," Montalbano said.

"I'm honoring the World War II veterans who are now in their 90s, and the three high school bands that were supposed to play. I've notified them. I don't think they can blow on their instruments at 30 degrees, so I thought weather-wise, I'd better cancel because I don't think the parents would be wanting their little kids to come out and see a parade in that (weather)."

A news release from the city of Springfield issued Friday morning noted that parade organizers hope to reschedule the parade at a later date but at this time, no decision has been made.
