BRIEF: Veterans bus seeks drivers

Moultrie Observer - 2/2/2017

Feb. 02--MOULTRIE, Ga. -- The Veterans Bus that helps veterans get to the VA hospital in Lake City, Fla., is calling for reinforcements.

The bus leaves Moultrie every Thursday morning and makes pick-ups in Thomasville, Boston and Valdosta before journeying to the hospital where veterans can meet with VA doctors and other medical personnel. It's operated by the South Georgia Veterans Activities Committee.

The committee is seeking volunteers to drive the bus, according to Faye Rowe, a leader of the project since the passing of Col. Hoyt Holland. Holland always credited Jerry Poole with the idea for the bus, but he was involved almost from the beginning when Poole asked him to re-upholster the seats of an old school bus for the project.

Holland, who died in 2015, often drove the bus, and Rowe is among the volunteers who've taken a turn behind the wheel.

Rowe said organizers want to set up a schedule where each volunteer drives about once a month, but to do that they need more volunteers.

Drivers must have a Commercial Driver's License.

Anyone who's interested can call Jimmy Revels at (229) 526-8140.
