Fifth year for Stand Up for Veterans

Peoria Times - 8/25/2017

More than 50 organizations will participate in the fifth annual Stand Up for Veterans event 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.Sept. 23 at Glendale Community College, 6000 W. Olive Ave.

It's a job and career fair all rolled into one in the GCC Student Union. Veterans get a free haircut and free lunch for themselves and their families, as well as apply for health care and other benefits. If they need a job, many businesses will be represented, along with support agencies to assist them with social services.

Michelle Alcantar, GCC director of community and business partnerships, said, "We want to make sure they get what they need and are honored that day."

Not only is it a job fair with social services, courts across the Valley assist veterans who may have legal issues. A judge will review the veteran's records and determine if community service hours will go toward fines or penalties. The State Bar of Arizona helps with home, family, medical ? any legal issue. The Arizona Motor Vehicle Division will be on hand to answer questions about drivers' licenses, and will be able to issue one to eligible veterans. Be sure to bring proper identification.

That's not all. GCC is considered one of the most military friendly college campuses in the country. Just this summer, the college celebrated the opening of a new and expanded veteran service center, where active and retired military can come to register for classes and receive counseling services.

It is a one-stop shop for veterans. At the Stand Up for Veterans event, a GCC representative will explain all of the educational opportunities available for veterans.

There are always more ways to help. If someone wants to donate items or cash to support the event, call Alcantar at 623-845-4771. That is also the number to call if you want to volunteer? receive a T-shirt for your service that day ? and if you want to take a tour of the new veteran service center.
