Veterans group to host parade

Messenger-Inquirer - 10/9/2017

Oct. 09--A nonprofit representing various local veterans organizations will host a Veterans Day Parade on Nov. 11 to honor past and present military personnel and remember those who have died.

November's annual parade marks more than 30 years that the Owensboro-Daviess County Veterans Organization will have put on the downtown parade. Louis Drawdy, a spokesperson for that organization and its legislative officer, characterized the parade as one way the community can show support for American heroism and bravery.

"We hold parades to remind people that we always have people deployed," he said. "While many of us vets are home safe, there are people out there standing where our boots used to be. We have to remember that mistakes were made in the past so we're not doomed to repeat them. We have to learn from those mistakes and then move forward."

Jim Goodall, a retired master sergeant with the U.S. Army, agreed.

"We have 1.8 million Americans who have died defending this country's freedom," he said. "We shouldn't forget that. That's what Veterans Day is all about."

The parade will feature state and local elected officials, veterans organizations, Junior ROTC units, local marching bands, motorcycle groups, classic cars and more. The parade route will start at Clay and Second streets, traveling west to St. Elizabeth Street where it will then head north and then west once again on Veterans Boulevard to the McConnell Plaza where it will disperse.

Participants are asked to arrive at the route's start at 1 p.m. before the 2 p.m. parade.

Anyone is invited to honor veterans by watching the downtown parade and join them at veterans post homes around town.

More information about joining the parade or information for spectators is available by calling Drawdy at 270-684-7501.

The committee's address is 1809 Grimes Ave. in Owensboro.
