David Fitzgerald to fill out Dennis Sharp's term in St. Tammany District 2

The Advocate - 10/15/2017

Oct. 15--David Fitzgerald won easily Saturday in the race to represent District 2 on the St. Tammany Parish Council. He'll fill out the remainder of Dennis Sharp's term, which is just over two years.

Sharp died in May, and Fitzgerald, who was a close friend of the councilman, sought the position on an interim basis and soon after announced his intentions to run in the special election.

He had 70 percent of the vote for most of the night, and in complete but unofficial returns, he won by that margin. Joe Freeman came in a distant second with 18 percent of the vote, and the other two candidates, Clark Taylor and Marvin Lawson, never broke out of single digits.

The 64-year-old Air Force veteran teaches chemistry at the New Orleans Military and Maritime Academy. He served in the Air Force and then worked as an airline pilot. He began teaching after he retired from American Airlines.

During the campaign, he said drainage and infrastructure are the key issues for the Covington area district, which he says has seen development over the past decade.

He also says that parish government needs to do a better job communicating with constituents about finances and wants to see better cooperation between government entities.
