Vancouver Island Military Museum Veterans Wall of Honour nearing completion

Nanaimo News Bulletin - 3/25/2018

Vancouver Island Military Museum is looking for names of a few good men and women to finish its Veterans Wall of Honour.

The museum staff are nearing completion of the fourth phase of the commemorative display, located on the museum building's left wall facing the display of the HMCS Nanaimo's former Bofors gun .

Brian McFadden, Vancouver Island Military Museum vice-president, said Thursday that of the 77 granite name plaques available for the wall, just 18 were left for sale. Once the fourth phase of the wall is completed, no more plaques will be available.

"We wanted to match the left side with the right, so when you look at the building, the whole thing kind of wraps right around. That was kind of the idea of it," McFadden said.

The first phase of the wall was completed in 2015. Once the fourth phase is finished, the wall will bear the names of 418 people who have served with Canadian, U.S. and other allied armed forces and the RCMP.

McFadden said the wall is the largest tribute-to-military-service wall in B.C.

"We want to say it's a tribute wall to their service," McFadden said. "Some people think its a memorial wall, which it isn't."

Plaques can be purchased for $195 each and proceeds help support the museum's programs and operations.

"This is it, if you don't get in on the largest tribute wall in B.C. then that's it, it's going to be over," McFadden.
