Veterans to be lauded in many ways
Pueblo Chieftain - 11/8/2018
Nov. 08--In recognition of Veterans Day, those who served in times of war and peace will be honored through a series of events and ceremonies throughout the city.
At 11 a.m. on Friday, the Southeast Asia Memorial on the campus of Colorado State University-Pueblo will be the site of a ceremony. Today and Friday, at the campus' Fountain Plaza, a veterans suicide awareness event will be held, followed by Sunday's Veterans Day concert, with music provided by the CSUPueblo music department, from 2-5 p.m. at the Occhiato Student Center Ballroom.
For the 17th year, The Pueblo Chieftain Veterans Day Parade, hosted by the Greater Pueblo Chamber of Commerce, will caravan through the Historic Union Avenue District starting at 10 a.m. Saturday.
This year's theme is 'Pueblo's Salute to the Spirit of Our Veterans.'
The parade marshal is Victor Sena, a decorated Army soldier who served for 24 years and saw action in the Vietnam War, with the honorary marshal role filled by Frank Atencio, who as a Marine fought during the Korean War.
The procession will begin on the corner of Union Avenue and B Street, continuing down Union Avenue before turning onto City Center Drive and then Main Street.
Traditionally, this wellattended event has featured both veterans and active duty military, historic vehicles, law enforcement, marching bands, motorcycles, Boy Scouts and a flyover from Doss Aviation.
At 1 p.m. Saturday, the Veterans Bridge on the Historic Arkansas Riverwalk of Pueblo will again be the site of the annual ceremony, which this year will put a spotlight on women who served.
Beginning with a Doss flyover, the ceremony will be ushered in by master of ceremonies Matt Albright, the program director for the Center for American Values. Albright's welcome will be followed by presentation of colors by the Pueblo Veterans Ritual Team, the pledge of allegiance and national anthem, and an invocation.
Scheduled to highlight their most memorable military moments are female veterans Jenny Rosenberry, Christina Trujillo, Dee Dunlap, Kris Anderson, Marella Wheaton, Cathrine Satow and Holly Knox.
Air Force Lt. Col. Elena O'Bryan will deliver the keynote address. O'Bryan is the state public affairs officer for the Colorado National Guard at Joint Force headquarters in Centennial. She also serves as a strategic planner for National Guard civil support operations in response to wildfires, floods, hurricanes and other emergencies affecting the state and nation.
The ceremony will conclude with a 21-gun salute, the playing of taps and a benediction, to be followed by a free 2 p.m. lunch at the American Legion Post 2, 701 W. 9th St.
The weekend of remembrance will conclude at 10:30 Sunday, the official obeservance of Veterans Day, at the Unitarian Universalist Church, 110 Calla Ave., with a 'Reclaim Armistice Day' program featuring Charles Butler as guest speaker. Refreshments will be available.
