Book talk: Cleveland psychologist wants to help folks avoid 'hanger'

Akron Beacon Journal - 1/22/2020

Do you need hanger management? Do you try to diet by eating no breakfast, or by skipping lunch, and then become so crabby that people avoid you? You might be hangry, a portmanteau of "hungry" and "angry" used by Cleveland psychologist Susan Albers in "Hanger Management: Master Your Hunger and Improve Your Mood, Mind, and Relationships."

Albers advocates eating mindfully -- that is, paying attention to and enjoying what you eat, instead of eating because you're stressed, or bored, or out of habit. Her book includes biological reasons for hanger, like blood sugar imbalances and hormones, but the main part of the book consists of strategies to avoid bad decisions and go from hangry to happy.

Among the subjects are learning and acknowledging the difference between hunger and appetite and anticipating hanger to better prepare to avert it. Albers cautions against becoming "regretfull" -- another portmanteau word that comes from the feeling of being sorry about having overeaten.

"Hanger Management" (254 pages, hardcover) costs $28 from Little, Brown and Company. Susan Albers earned a doctorate from the University of Denver and is a clinical psychologist at the Cleveland Clinic. Her other books include "But I Deserve This Chocolate! The 50 Most Common Diet-Derailing Excuses and How to Outwit Them." She will sign "Hanger Management" from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Perry Public Library, 3753 Main St.

The 18th century genius Johann Carl Friedrich Gauss was called the Prince of Mathematics, but in "Sit Down, Little Prince: A Math Story About Carl Friedrich Gauss," he has the nickname "Little Prince" long before he demonstrates his genius with numbers.

Sisters and former Cuyahoga Falls residents Jean Colebank and Margeaux Lucas have fictionalized the story of the young boy, born in 1777 into a poor household. The authors have his doting mother making him clothes of velvet, satin and silk, which he encourages his parents to sell for money to send him to school.

The schoolmaster is skeptical, and young Johann is advised by a classmate that if he is too diligent in class, the teacher will keep him in at recess to help with menial work. Johann is beginning to think that school is a waste of time when he astonishes the master with a quick calculation, and this sets him on his course to history.

The text is by Colebank, and Lucas contributes the comical illustrations.

"Sit Down, Little Prince!" (32 pages, softcover) costs $12.95 from Saddle Point Publishing, a New York enterprise that also involves a third sister.
