‘Spider-Man’ star Tom Holland ‘taking a break from social media’ to protect mental health

The New York Daily News - 8/15/2022

“Spider-Man” star Tom Holland is leaving the web of social media, revealing that he is “overstimulated and overwhelmed.”

The “Spider-Man: No Way Home” actor made “a very, very brief return” to social media Sunday to say “hello and goodbye” to his 67.7 million Instagram followers.

Bidding adieu with a video message on Sunday, Holland expressed the need to tune out in order to make his mental health a priority.

“I have taken a break from social media for my mental health because I find Instagram and Twitter to be overstimulating, to be overwhelming …I get caught up and I spiral when I read things about me online,” he said in the nearly three-minute clip. “Ultimately it’s very detrimental for my mental state.”

The 26-year-old English native, who has become a paparazzi magnet because of his romance with Zendaya, revealed that he has gotten rid of popular apps like Instagram and Twitter in order to keep his peace of mind.

He also shed some light on stem4, a UK-based teenage mental health-focused organization that his own charity, Brothers Trust, has supported because of the “awful stigma surrounding mental health.”

“I know that asking for help and seeking help isn’t something we should be ashamed of, but it is something that is much easier said than done,” the British Film Academy Award winner continued in the clip before sharing which free mental health apps he personally uses.

Holland signed off by telling fans he was “going to disappear from Instagram again” but thanked them for their love and support.

“I love you all and I’ll speak to you soon,” the former “Billy Elliott” actor concluded.
