Mental health resources in Lynn

The Daily Item - 5/22/2023

May 22—LYNN — May is Mental Health Awareness Month and there are multiple organizations and programs in the city that provide mental health services to those in Lynn and the neighboring communities.

Eliot Community Human Services, which is committed to serving those at risk, with limited or no resources for help, has opened two Community Behavioral Health Centers (CBHC) this year.

The Tri-City Area CBHC at 95 Pleasant street in Lynn, as well as one in Danvers, provides timely and high-quality evidence-based treatment for mental health and substance use disorders.

According to Vice President of Behavioral Health Services Aaron Katz, those with MassHealth can receive all CBHC services.

"Children, adults and families with other health insurances or no health insurance can receive urgent and emergency care. We are working hard to serve as many people as we can. Call us to find out how we can help you," Katz said.

The Lynn location also serves residents from surrounding areas, including Lynnfield, Nahant, Saugus and Swampscott. According to the website, no one will be turned away. Even if an individual doesn't live in one of these towns, the organization is committed to serving everyone.

Centerboard, another nonprofit, has a program called Community Treatment Residence. This eight-bed program is available to youth ages 12-18 that are referred by the Department of Children and Families. According to the website, the program provides residents an opportunity to live in a trauma-informed, therapeutic, supportive environment, while safely accessing the community. Along with clinical support, the program assists youth with meeting their educational and vocational goals.

Health Law Advocates, a public interest law firm that provides pro bono legal representation to income-eligible residents having difficulty accessing or paying for needed medical services, created The Mental Health Advocacy Program for Kids, which services Lynn, as well as other cities in Massachusetts. According to its website, the program has a proven track record of significantly improving the lives of children with mental health needs, while reducing unnecessary costs for the state.

Lisa Morrow is the attorney from Health Law Advocates that covers Lynn. Based out of the Lynn Family Resource Center, she provides free representation to parents of children with unmet mental health needs.

Lynn Community Health Center also offers behavioral health services, including individual therapy for both children and adults, family counseling, group therapy and treatment for patients with substance use disorder.
