---- PROTOTYPE --------- PURPOSE: To create a prototype device based on sonar that allows individuals who are congenitally blind to sense their surroundings. Researchers from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem have developed a device, "Sonar Vision," which transforms images into sound, enabling an individual who is blind to perceive visual information audibly. Results of a conducted study using the technology were published in "Neuron." This sonar system can transform images into sounds by using a combination of a video camera embedded in a pair of eyeglasses, a laptop, and headphones. Before being able to "see" with this device, a person needs approximately 70 hours of specialized training in identifying shapes transformed into sound. After this training, the individual who is blind may become adept at perceiving information such as the location of people in a room and reading words and letters. AUTHOR: Stanley Darma.
