---- PROTOTYPE --------- PURPOSE: To create a prototype of a custom prosthetic leg extension for a child with proximal femoral focal deficiency (PFFD). A 5-year-old boy with one leg significantly shorter than the other due to PFFD received a new prosthetic extension designed specifically for him. The boy's traditional prosthesis makes his legs the same length but does not aid in the boy's mobility. The leg created by engineering students at Purdue University uses an innovative gearbox design to produce a knee's range of motion that enables the prosthesis to move like a real leg for a more natural gait. The ankle joint swivels about 40 degrees and the knee joint moves about 90 degrees. The new design features an innovative gearbox that converts the ankle's limited movement to the motion of the knee to provide greater mobility. The engineering students seek to enhance the prosthetic leg by creating a mold of the boy's shin improve the device's fit. AUTHOR: Editors.
