The Expanded Beginner's Abacus Kit is a math learning tool designed to introduce students who are blind or have low vision to early math concepts and number operations using the abacus. It supports concepts and skills such as one-to-one correspondence, number meaning, and addition and subtraction. The Beginner's Abacus consists of a black rectangular frame with three vertical rods placed side-by-side inside the frame. Each rod has nine white beads that slide up and down against a red felt backing. The red felt backing provides a sharp visual contrast against the white beads, and prevents the beads from accidentally slipping. The Expanded Beginner's Abacus Kit comes with hook/loop strips that students can use to connect multiple abacuses together. These are for times when students need to complete computations that involve numbers too large for one Beginner’s Abacus. The kit comes with a print guidebook as well (a braille guidebook is available separately).
