FIFTY YEARS AGO

The Manitoba legislature gave second reading, approval in principle, to a bill involving the Keystone Centre in Brandon. The legislation relieves the city of its responsibility for buildings and land that make up the Winter Fair grounds.

FORTY YEARS AGO

John Diefenbaker’s body lies in state today at the University of Saskatchewan’s Convocation Hall, the Saskatoon auditorium where the former prime minister received his master’s degree in 1916.

The worldwide McDonald’s chain announced a 10 per cent price reduction for regular hamburgers and cheeseburgers. Under the golden arches, hamburgers now go for 50 cents, while cheeseburgers are 60 cents.

THIRTY YEARS AGO

Air force veterans are mourning three more comrades who didn’t survive their last mission to transport a war memento from Brandon to an air gunner’s reunion in Regina this week. Ex-gunners Stephen Young, Wesley Grant Wilson and George Tudruk of Regina were killed west of Brandon yesterday in a truck crash on the Trans-Canada Highway.

TWENTY YEARS AGO

City council gave final approval to a bylaw rezoning 23 hectares of land at the corner of 18th Street North and Kirkcaldy Drive from agricultural residential reserve to residential and highway commercial. The approval allows Winnipeg developer A & S Homes to pursue leases with potential tenants. A & S plans to develop a mall fronting on 18th, some form of rental housing and single-family homes. Construction could begin as early as spring.

TEN YEARS AGO

The call for tenders for construction of the city’s new police station was issued yesterday — a signal that the project is finally moving ahead. The new police headquarters will be created by renovating the former Safeway building at the corner of 10th Street and Victoria Avenue.
