The Hillsdale Daily News - 9/23/2020

Sep. 23--HILLSDALE -- The 2020 Hillsdale County Veteran of the Year and Runner-Up Veteran of the Year have been selected.

The 2020 Veteran of the Year is Stephen Tulloch of Hillsdale.

Tulloch is a member of the Jonesville American Legion Post 195 and is very active in the community as chairperson of his local monthly book club and working with the Boy Scouts of America on various Eagle Scout projects.

At the Legion, Tulloch is involved with scrap metal drive, roadside cleanups, raffle sales, judging the high school Veterans Day Speeches and assists with the airport fly ins. Tulloch also serves on the Legion's scholarship committee and is presently the post's finance officer.

"Steve has been deeply involved in the Veteran Memorial at the fairgrounds, having invested hundreds of hours toward the completion of this," said Gary Noblit, chairman of the Hillsdale County Veteran of the Year Committee. "His dedication to this one project is exemplary."

Tulloch served 11 years active duty in the U.S. Army, serving as a field artillery and aviation officer in Texas and Alaska earning the Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Air Assault Badge and Senior Aviator Wings.

Before moving to Hillsdale, Tulloch retired from the Broward County Sheriff's Office in Florida where he served as a field training officer with experience on the dive team and as a detective with the strategic enforcement team.

The 2020 Runner-Up Veteran of the Year is Frank Osmulski of the Reading American Legion Post 360.

Osmulski's early years were spent in the great Detroit Metropolitan area where he eventually retired from Detroit Edison.

During that time, Osmulski served as a volunteer firefighter for 26-years with the Brownstown Fire Department where he was chosen as Fireman of the Year in 1998 and retired with the rank of Battalion Chief in 2000.

"Mr. Osmulski considers his involvement in the American Legion an important part of his life," Noblit said. "He was a member of Post 225 until moving to the Reading area where he transferred to Post 360."

Osmulski's duties at the Reading Post include service as sergeant of arms, second vice commander and he currently serves as the first vice commander.

And, as always, Osmulski volunteers for most projects at the post, Noblit said.

Osmulski served in the U.S. Air Force after graduating high school and worked in communications before being honorably discharged in 1965 after obtaining a marksmanship badge, good conduct medal and unit citation with oak leaf clusters.

"Frank is well known for a kind word and a can do attitude and believes community service is just a part of being a good citizen," Noblit said.

Osmulski and Tulloch will be honored during a short ceremony at 11 a.m.Sept. 28 at the Nichols Bandshell at the Hillsdale County Fairgrounds. The event is open to the public.
