Quincy cancels Veterans Day parade

The Patriot Ledger - 10/1/2020

QUINCY -- The city has called of its annual Veterans Day festivities in favor of a toned-down memorial service at Merrymount Park due to restrictions brought by the coronavirus pandemic.

Quincy usually celebrates Veterans Day with a parade, followed by a formal observance. Social distancing guidelines make hosting a parade challenging, Quincy Mayor Thomas Koch said this week, and officials will instead have a small program near the World War II memorial statue in Merrymount Park on Wednesday, Nov. 11.

"We're disappointed, obviously we like to honor our vets, but we will still find a way," Koch said.

The city was also forced to cancel its Flag Day parade, which is the longest-running celebration of its kind. Koch said a decision has not yet been made on the annual Christmas parade, but he imagines that will be decided in the coming weeks.

The mayor is asking for the names of any Quincy veterans who served or are currently serving to have their names listed as honorary committee members in relation to the ongoing Generals Bridge project. Any living or deceased Quincy veterans are eligible for the honor and will have their names listed in the program for the May 15, 2021 dedication of the bridge, which will honor six generals in the armed forces.

Interested veterans or their families should send the name of the person who served, in which branch, for which years and at which rank to Mary Mulvey at mmulvey@quincyma.gov.
