Event thanks veterans for service

High Point Enterprise - 5/12/2021

May 12—HIGH POINT — Area residents are invited to show their gratitude to veterans on Saturday during Military Appreciation Day at the Heroes Center.

This will be the sixth annual observance of the event, originally held at the Carolina Field of Honor in Kernersville.

Starting with music at 11 a.m., attendees will witness a motorcycle honor ride into the center at 1500 Bridges Drive. Around noon, an 18-member Randolph County honor guard will call for the colors before the National Anthem is played, said Bob Uber, president of the Heroes Center.

"COVID aside, I believe there is a lot of unexpressed appreciation for what our veterans have done for our country because there's no place or venue to express it," Uber said. "When we hold a citywide event to honor our veterans, both living and fallen, it also allows the public that. I used to call it Hug A Vet Day; now it's a virtual hug. You have to have an opportunity, a venue where the public can come out and express their appreciation for the service of our military to this country."

A three-volley rifle salute will be followed by a moment of silence for POWs or MIAs and the playing of taps for the fallen, Uber said.

A folding of the flag ceremony will be followed by remarks from featured speaker Brig. Gen. James R. Gorham, a retired veteran and the first Black officer to become a general in the N.C. National Guard. The blueprint for what led to Gorham's success in the military, banking industry and as a family member is chronicled in his book, "Sharecropper's Wisdom: Growing Today's Leaders the Old Fashioned Way."

There will be vintage military displays, vendors and classic cars, Uber said. Attendees are encouraged to bring a lawn chair and observe COVID19 protocols during the outdoors event, which is expected to end at 2 p.m.
