Women veterans honored with week's worth of Jacksonville events

Florida Times-Union - 6/3/2021

Events to honor women who fought and served in America's armed forces will be throughout Jacksonville for the next week presented by the city's Military Affairs and Veterans Department and Northeast Florida Women Veterans.

The eighth annual Women Veterans Recognition Week kicks this Saturday and continues through next Saturday.

"Women veterans have played an integral part in protecting this country alongside their male counterparts, making immeasurable contributions to our nation," Mayor Lenny Curry said. "I encourage all citizens to recognize the courage, honor and dignity with which women have served, and continue to serve, in Jacksonville."

The Northeast Florida Women Veterans association helps women who have served on active duty, the National Guard or reserves transition into civilian life and become self-sufficient. That includes support and career services to women veterans and advocacy and community awareness of their challenges and accomplishments at the local, state and national level.

CEO Dee Quaranta started the celebration in 2013 to pay tribute to the accomplishments of women in the military, especially those who blazed new trails during World War II and the Korean War eras. The events of this week also bring community awareness to some of the challenges women veterans face after military service, the association said.
