Local veterans remembered at Memorial Day ceremonies

Sequim Gazette - 5/31/2023

As tradition, flags went out across Sequim for Memorial Day on May 29 with a handful of ceremonies held at area cemeteries recoginizing those lost during their military service, and the many late-veterans laid to rest in Sequim.

American Legion Post 62 led ceremonies at Sequim View Cemetery, Jamestown Cemetery, Dungeness Cemetery, and Blue Mountain Cemetery, while VFW Post 4760 held a ceremony at Gardiner Cemetery where Medal of Honor recipient Marvin Shields is buried. Flags were set at veterans' graves on May 27 and recovered late Monday.

Sgt. at arms Debbie Rogers with the American Legion said she's helped with local ceremonies for three years.

"It's quite the honor to raise our flag for our country," she said.
